We see all of these pictures and captions from our friends, mutual friends, and the people we "know of” and we convince ourselves that this is what staying in touch means. This is how most people stay connected to each other because of how effortless it is. You follow a friend, you scroll, and you're guaranteed (for the most part) to get updates about them throughout your life. We take for granted the fact that these are real people, and while it’s definitely much easier to be their follower, in order to actually be considered their friend - you have to talk to them.
We'll be the first ones to admit though, it's so much easier to just scroll and learn about people. It's much harder to actually keep track of who you need to catch up with on your own. We’re not trying to tell you that it’s wrong or that we’re better than social media, we’re just trying to make it easier for you to actually talk to people too. Actually listen to the stories your friend has about their latest trip to Cancun instead of just liking the picture of the sunset in the background.
Maybe if we take the effort out of talking to people, it will level the playing field so that social media isn’t the only tool we rely on to catch up. Instead of “follow and scroll to be guaranteed updates throughout your life”, we made an app that allows you to “add a friend, click a button, and be guaranteed connection throughout your life” (and we’ll throw in your mutual friends too).
