One study observed professional jazz pianists' brain activity while freely improvising or playing a memorized composition in an fMRI scanner. Improvisation was linked to increased activity in the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) in addition to widespread activity in sensorimotor and language areas. Similarly, freestyle rappers exhibited increased MPFC activity during improvisation in another fMRI study.

Studies suggest that the default mode network (DMN) becomes active during low cognitive control states and contributes to spontaneous thought generation during daydreaming, playing a crucial role in creative behavior. Researchers found that individuals with more creative responses had greater gray matter volume in DMN regions such as the precuneus.
