The Fall of the House of Usher is a fantasy short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. It was first published in September 1839 in the literary journal Burton's Gentleman's Magazine.
Summary
The narrator, a childhood friend of Roderick Usher, accepts the latter's invitation to stay for a while at the Usher House. In his letter of invitation, Usher tells him about an evil that oppresses him.
Barely arriving at the Usher House, and seeing the estate, the narrator feels a deep unease. He enters the manor, and meets his friend, whose appearance was so changed by his illness that the narrator struggles to recognize him. This illness from which he suffers is a family illness, which manifests itself through extranatural sensations. This disease is called “hypochondria”. (Audio book)
