Summary
In a prelude to the story of the accident, the sailor recounts his adventurous daily life with his two brothers. They usually fish among the islands where the violent eddies of the sea give good fishing, provided they take advantage of a fifteen minute respite from the waters to launch through the main channel of the Maelstrom. One day, the wind was more violent than usual, which surprised the fishermen who were unable to cross the pass before being carried away by the whirlwind current. When the two brothers see that there is no longer any hope of getting out of this, the narrator decides to tie himself to a barrel and throw himself into the sea. His older brother – the younger having been swept away in a first gust - does not have the courage to resolve it and he sinks with the boat. The storm gradually subsides and pushes the survivor towards the coast. A boat fishes him out but he has become completely unrecognizable, suddenly aged: “like a traveler returning from the world of spirits. ".. (Audio book)
