The aim of the present guideline for the calculation of parenteral initial therapy is a rational anti-infective prescription (Antibiotic Stewardship, abbreviated to ABS). ABS is a programmatic, sustainable effort to improve and ensure rational anti-infective prescription practice. These are strategies or measures that ensure the quality of the anti-infective treatment with regard to selection, dosage, application and duration of use, in order to achieve the best clinical treatment result with minimum patient toxicity. ABS programs that combine several ABS measures have a positive influence on the development of resistance, costs and consumption.
An important reason for the preparation of the present antibiotic guideline for the calculated parenteral initial therapy is the need for standardization and thus optimization of antibiotic therapy.
At the same time they should be a guide to the responsible doctor for quick decision-making.
The antibiotic guidelines for our home are updated every two years and approved by the Drug Commission.
Our guidelines are based on the guidelines of the Paul-Ehrlich-Gesellschaft and adapted to the spectrum of pathogens found in our house. However, they do not release the attending physician from the careful examination of the patient's situation prior to each application of these guidelines.
Guidelines have the property that they can be applied to the majority of patients in most situations. Deviations from the present guideline may still be necessary and thus possible, but should remain rationally justifiable.
