On February 11, 1981, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Pope John Paul II created the new Diocese of Guarulhos by the Bull “Plane Intelligitur” on January 30, 1981 and appointed its first Diocesan Bishop, Dom João bergese. The Diocese comprises the Municipality of Guarulhos and its inhabitants. It was installed on the 5th of April of the same year with the inauguration of its first Bishop, Dom João Bergese. There were 16 parishes plus the Paróquia Santa Mena created at the same time.
There were 22 priests in Guarulhos and 09 Female and 01 Male Religious Congregations working in the Diocese for a population of over 500,000 inhabitants.
In these 40 years Guarulhos has grown: the Parishes went from 17 to 46, one more Parish of Maronita Rite; Communities with their Chapels jumped from 48 to 165; patterns from 22 to 50; the female Religious Congregations from 9 to 14 plus the Secular Institute of Diocesan Missionaries and the male Religious Congregation of Theatine Fathers; the number of inhabitants grew a lot: from half a million to 1,300,000. Our Church in Guarulhos can count on almost 11,000 pastoral agents who perform a great service to evangelization in this city.
