Dom Helder Pessoa Camara (1909-1999) was a Catholic bishop, emeritus archbishop of Olinda and Recife. One of the founders of the Brazilian National Bishops' Conference (CNBB) and a great defender of human rights during the period of the military dictatorship in Brazil.

He has received numerous awards, including the Martin Luther King Award in the United States and the People's Peace Prize in Norway.
