The Spanish postal code system comprises a series of codes used to improve the functioning of the postal service in Spain. Postal codes were introduced in Spain in 1981,1 coinciding with the implementation of automated mail sorting procedures. Previously, from the early 1961 to 1970s, so-called "postal districts" existed in major cities, covering larger areas than the postal codes that were later introduced. In 1985, in a first phase, the use of the code was introduced only in the provincial capitals (with 0 as the third digit) and in the cities of Vigo and Gijón, by dividing all of them into several zones and assigning a code to each one of them. In 1987, all the remaining localities released their postal codes, unique for the entire population and even for several towns in the same municipality (third digit between 1 and 9). Subsequently, there have been some changes, which basically consisted in the zoning and assignment of codes of the non-capital municipalities with the largest population.
Currently the Spanish territory is divided into 11 752 postal codes.
