1. OBJECTIVE
Chest computed tomography (CT) is an imaging test that uses an x-ray source and computing technology to create detailed images of the thoracic region. This diagnostic imaging modality provides information about intrathoracic organs, tissues and structures, including the heart, lungs, mediastinum, blood vessels and bones. In this experiment, you will deepen your knowledge in imaging diagnosis using the chest CT technique.
At the end of this experiment, you should be able to:
Identify the parameters necessary for the formation and quality of images;
Know patient preparation protocols;
Correctly interpret chest computed tomography images.
2. WHERE TO USE THESE CONCEPTS?
Chest CT is an imaging technique widely used in various areas of medicine, such as: diagnosis of lung diseases; detection and staging of lung cancer; assessment of mediastinal diseases; assessment of pulmonary embolism; preoperative assessment; treatment monitoring; and therapeutic response, among others. These are just a few examples of how chest CT is applied in various clinical situations in which you will work as a biomedical professional.
3. THE EXPERIMENT
For this experiment, the patient must be positioned, following the recommended protocol, on a table that slides into a CT scanner. The scanner consists of a ring that contains an x-ray tube and detectors. As the table moves through the ring, the x-ray tube rotates around the patient, emitting x-ray beams in different directions. The scanner's detectors capture the X-rays that pass through the body and convert the information into digital images.
4. SECURITY
To carry out this practice, it is important to highlight the care that the professional must take at each stage of the exam, as well as follow the protocol and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as lab coat, gloves and mask.
5. SCENARIO
This experiment will be carried out in the diagnostic imaging room. This room is a controlled area, that is, only qualified professionals can enter it, as long as there is no X-ray machine turned on (emitting radiation). In this room, you will find: CT equipment (tomography); a contrast injection pump; foams and immobilizing bands; material for peripheral venipuncture, contrast and/or medication; and the PPE necessary to carry out the practice.
