The best science in benefit, and the highest in rank, is the knowledge of what is obligatory for a servant to his Lord, of God’s unification in his Lordship, His names, attributes, and divinity, and for that God created the creation, sent the messengers, and sent down the books, so the science of monotheism is the most honorable and best of all sciences, and it is the right of God upon all His servants, and for this reason He created His servants with the intention of acknowledging Him.
But the devils deviate them from the straight path, and that accuses them of what opposes and contradicts it, so it was obligatory to know what opposes this monotheism and contradicts it, which is polytheism in God Almighty, and for this we see God Almighty often mentioning monotheism and mentioning with it what is opposite to it, and for the validity of monotheism he stipulated the avoidance of polytheism, just as that God, Blessed and Exalted be He, stipulated that deeds be accepted, that entry into Paradise, and that sins be forgiven: the avoidance of polytheism, and He stipulated that those who hope to meet Him should not associate anything with Him.
