The Islamic month of Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. This commemorates the martyrdom of the younger grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Hazrat Imam Husain and his followers. Muharram is one of the four sacred months, wherein fighting is strictly prohibited. The first ten days of this holy month are highly sacred and observed through fasting. The Shia Muslims, in particular, consider these days to be the ‘days of grief’. The major festivities can be seen on the tenth day of Muharram that is Ashura, where the Shia Muslims take out processions carrying colorfully decorated taziyas (bamboo and paper replicas of the martyr’s tomb).
