The words "Sufism" and "Sufi" were not known in the early days of Islam, this word is a new expression that was infiltrated into Islam by other people.

Syaikhul Islam Ibnu Taimiyah –rahimahullah- in Majmu' Fatawa said: "As for the word Sufi was not known in the first three centuries of Hijriah, it was only known after that. This opinion has been expressed by more than one imam, such as Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal, Abu Sulaiman Ad -Darani and others.There is a history that Abu Sufyan Ats-Tsauri once mentioned Sufis, some of them quoted him from Hasan Basri.

There is a difference of opinion about the word "Sufi" which is attached to the back of his name, which is actually a family name such as "Qurasyi", "Madany" and the like.

Some say that the word Sufi comes from the word Expertssuffah, this is wrong, because if that is what is meant then the sentence reads: Suffiyy.
