Indonesian language textbooks are written with the aim that students have competence in Indonesian for various purposes as social activities. It is hoped that the activities designed in the book can help students develop the language competencies needed in real life.
The main concept of textbook development is genre-based. Genre is interpreted as a social activity that has different types according to the purpose of the social activity and its communicative goals. Each type of genre has a specific way of expression (rhetorical structure of the text) and specific linguistic elements. This is a new way of looking at language. If the 2006 Curriculum emphasizes a communicative approach, the 2013 Curriculum actually sharpens the effects of communication and the impact of its social function.
In the 2006 curriculum, students are taught to write letters in a standard format that does not emphasize the content of the letter. In the 2013 Curriculum, letters written by students must have a social impact, such as being able to show personality in job application letters and/or letters to convince other people. Language and content are two things that support each other. This is in line with the development of language teaching theory in Europe and America, namely Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). CLIL highlights four important elements to sharpen the understanding of language competence, namely content, language/communication, cognition and culture.
Each chapter in this book was developed by referring to the theoretical concepts underlying the 2013 Curriculum, namely genre-based learning and CLIL (content language integrated learning). The textbook syllabus was developed based on genre-based syllabus development and genre pedagogy. Each chapter of this textbook includes three things, namely an explanation of the text (purpose, rhetorical structure, language) and social location, text models and study of text models, as well as exercises and assignments, including competency development assignments.
Indonesian language textbooks consist of Teacher's Books and Student's Books. The Student Book contains a description of the Core Competencies and Basic Competencies (KI and KD) for students to study. The Teacher's Book contains general Indonesian language learning guides and techniques for using student books.
