Indonesian language textbooks are written with the aim of providing students with Indonesian language competence for various purposes in social activities. It is hoped that the activities designed in the book can help students develop the language competencies needed in everyday life.

The development of this Indonesian language textbook is genre-based. Genre is interpreted as a social activity that has different types according to the purpose of the social activity and its communicative goals. Each genre has a unique way of expression (rhetorical structure of the text) and specific linguistic elements. This is a new way of looking at language. If KTSP emphasizes a communication approach, the 2013 Curriculum further sharpens the effects of communication and the impact of its social function. For example, previously KTSP taught students to write letters in a standard format without placing too much emphasis on Islamic letters. In the 2013 Curriculum Islamic letters must have a social impact. Language and Islam are two things that support each other. This is in line with the development of language teaching theory in Europe and America, Content Language Integrated Learning, which highlights four important elements to sharpen the understanding of language competence, namely ISL (content), communication (communication), cognition (cognition), and culture (culture).

The development of chapters in the book refers to the theoretical concepts underlying the 2013 Curriculum, namely genre-based learning and CLIL (Content Language Integrated Learning). The syllabus in the textbook was developed based on the development of a genre-based syllabus and genre pedagogy. Each chapter in this textbook includes: (I) an explanation of the text (purpose, rhetorical structure, language) and social location; (2) text model and text model study; (3) exercises and assignments; (4) independent competency development tasks.

Textbooks consist of student books and teacher books. The student book contains learning material and the competencies to be achieved. Meanwhile, the teacher's book contains a guide to teaching competencies to students.
