This excellent book has had a major impact on current discussions on the relationship between Islam and politics in Indonesia. Its greatest strength lies in its innovative characterization of three models of state in Indonesia, not the usual two, namely an Islamic state and a secular state. Luthfi brilliantly describes a third model which he calls the Democratic Democratic State, and in the process of drawing it up he helps clarify our understanding of the models of the state in Indonesia.

This book is a pioneering scientific work from an empirical as well as a theoretical point of view. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first systematic attempt to interpret Indonesian Muslim political thought over a long period of time, from the mid-1940s to the present, and the first to attempt to develop a theoretical model of that thought by categorizing different currents of political thought according to their ideal political aims, and at the same time by providing the instruments for further analysis. This book is addressed with conviction and delivered with very solid arguments. He provides a new perspective on the character, substance, and direction of the course of political thought in Indonesia.
