------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Château de Chazey-sur-Ain, a heritage gem nestled on the banks of the Ain River
Halfway between Bourg-en-Bresse and Lyon, the village of Chazey-sur-Ain unfolds its peaceful streets at the foot of its imposing medieval castle. Bordered by the Ain River, this unassuming village in the Ain department (01) charms both history buffs and those who enjoy bucolic walks.
But don't be fooled: behind its tranquility lies a turbulent past, rich in lordships, conflicts, agricultural and industrial developments… and even contemporary cultural experiences.
> Chazey Castle: Guardian of the Centuries
The soul of Chazey-sur-Ain undoubtedly resides in its magnificently preserved 13th-century fortified castle, flanked by its two towers. It proudly overlooks the village and tells the story of eight centuries of history.
By turns a fortress, a noble residence, a religious school, and then a cultural center, it was for a long time the stronghold of powerful families in the region, including the Rivoire de La Tourette, who profoundly shaped the identity of the place. Today, this castle regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts, and performances, thus combining heritage and contemporary creation.
A Land of Passage and Exchange
Located at a natural crossroads between the Bugey, the Dombes, and the Ain plain, Chazey-sur-Ain was a strategic location from the Middle Ages onward. Trade flowed along the riverbanks, forest paths, and the vaulted passageways of the town.
This rich past is still evident in the architecture: old earthen farmhouses, mills, wash houses, and wayside crosses dot the surrounding area, vestiges of a rural world where every stone had a purpose, a memory.
