Velociraptor (from Latin, 'speedy thief') is a genus of dromaeosaurid theropod dinosaurs that lived during the Campaniaense, towards the end of the Cretaceous period, about 75 to 71 million years ago, in what is now Asia.1 Traditionally only has recognized one species, V. mongoliensis, whose fossils have been found in Central Asia, in Mongolia, but a second species, V. osmolskae, was named in 2008 from cranial material from Inner Mongolia, China.
Although smaller than other dromaeosaurids such as Deinonychus and Achillobator, Velociraptor had many similar anatomical features to them. It was a bipedal carnivore, with a long, stiff tail, and large sickle-shaped claws on each leg, which probably made it easier for it to kill its prey. Unlike other dromaeosaurids, the velociraptor had a low, elongated skull and a flat, upturned snout. It had long hind legs, which expresses (like the name) its apparent great speed.
