The greatest danger to a poem is that you read it. Why? Reading is automatic.
A poem has rhythm. A poem plays with sound and language. A poem refers, connects, has stacked meanings. How do you ensure that you do not read a poem, but internalize it and understand it?
By building it yourself.
Puzzling Poetry is an addictive poem sliding game in which words are replaced by visualisations. You are expected to reconstruct it into a poem. The game is at the intersection of literature and gameplay. The visualisations of the poems are always different, making them both the problem and the solution. You play with the words from the poem that bring it to life. The reward of completing is a poem read aloud by the poet himself. For the time being, this game can be played with three poems by Lucas Hirsch. Later on, the poems of other poets will be added to the game, starting with 3 poems by Ruth Lasters and Remco Campert.
Puzzling Poetry arose from an open call from the Stimulation Fund and the idea was developed by Lucas Hirsch and Studio Louter. The app will be presented during the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2016.
