Early 'Hague' farmers on buried dunes

 

The Wateringse Binnentuinen are now a spacious new residential area in The Hague, with lots of greenery and water. Almost five thousand years ago it was much larger, greener and more watery there. Here was a row of dunes, near the former coastline, in the middle of marshes. There, around 2900 BC, a group of people appeared, undoubtedly with a tree canoe. They spent a few days in a shelter and ate a porpoise. Not long after their departure, more people came to see dense dunes. They built houses, fed cattle and sowed fields. They were only a few dozen and almost had the empire alone. Almost because they had contacts with neighbors down the dunes, and with people far in the south, where the flint and stone tools came from that they needed. After a while these early Hague farmers left again with an unknown destination.

Archaeologists from the municipality of Den haag excavated and studied the residence of these people in 2011 and 2012. Based on their findings, archaeologists Peter Stokkel and Evert van Ginkel have written a book about prehistoric life on the dunes. They reconstruct that life on the basis of vague earth traces and small pieces of flint and earthenware, which come to life through beautiful photographs and 'interactive pages'. With a smartphone or tablet, the reader can conjure up a moving image of making an arrow, modeling a pot or cutting down a tree with a stone ax. A surprising look into a long gone time!
