The NPTE was developed to measure knowledge and abilities required of entry-level physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs).

The exam consists of objective, multiple-choice questions covering the major areas of physical therapy. The PT exam includes 250 items and the PTA exam includes 200 items.

Committees comprised of PTs and PTAs develops them based on national analyses of the tasks that physical therapists and physical therapist assistants perform.
