Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1–9), when palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent.

Early Christians used the palm branch to symbolize the victory of the faithful over enemies of the soul, as in the Palm Sunday festival celebrating the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.

Palm Sunday is the start of Holy Week, which is the week before Easter, commemorating events in the last days of Jesus Christ's life. According to Christian belief, Jesus rode into Jerusalem where people gave him a hero's welcome during the Jewish Passover celebration.

The Feast of Palm Sunday, commemorates Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem and the Resurrection of Lazarus, as these two feasts are linked. Today at church, we are given bay leaves and woven palm crosses, which are placed in baskets in front of the icon of the Lord. The palms are then distributed to the faithful.
