Machiavelli always justified the actions of the prince whatever the purpose of strengthening or preserving the state, even if this was contrary to laws and morals, so the Machiavellian became synonymous with opportunism and without principles and morals that reach their goals by any means indifferent to their moral or legal legitimacy.
