Happy Diwali Deepavali falls in either October or November each year depends on the cycle of the moon. Normally, Happy Diwali Deepavali is observed on the 15th day of Kartik, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar.
Actually, Happy Diwali Deepavali runs for five days with the main celebrations happening on the third day in most places. Goddess Lakshmi is the primary deity that's worshiped, although each day has a special significance.
The first day, Dhanteras, marks the start of Happy Diwali Deepavali. It is dedicated to celebrating wealth. People traditionally buy gold and new kitchen utensils on this day. Homes are cleaned and readied to welcome Goddess Lakshimi prosperity. All will also get together to play cards.
The second day, Naraka Chaturdasi or litte Happy Diwali Deepavali (Little Diwali). It is created in doorways and courtyards of homes and people start bursting crackers. Lord Krishna and Goddess Kali are believed to have destroyed the demon Narakasura.
The third day, a lots of small clay lamps and candles are lit and placed in houses. Fireworks are also let off everywhere, giving Diwali festival lights. All gather together and perform the Lakshmi Puja, and give each other gifts and sweets. Kali Puja is usually also celebrated on this day in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam. Goddess Kali, the fearsome Dark Mother is worshiped for her ability to destroy the ego and illusions that go with it.
The fourth day, merchants open fresh accounts for Diwali Deepavali Lights, and offer prayers. Govardhan Puja is celebrated to commemorate the rain god of Lord Krishna's defeat of Indra.
The fifth day, Bhai Duj, Diwali festival lights is dedicated to celebrating sisters. Brothers and sisters get together and share food to honour the bond between them.
Diwali festival lights rituals vary according to region. However, special blessings are given to Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh, the remover of obstacles. Goddess Lakshmi is believed to have been created from the churning of the ocean on the main Diwali day, and that she'll visit every home during the Diwali period, bringing with her prosperity and good fortune.
Diwali Deepavali lights said that she visits the cleanest houses first, therefore people make sure their houses are spotless before lighting lamps to invite her in. This cleaning also symbolizes purification of the mind to remove negativity, clutter and ignorance. Small statues of the goddess are worshiped at people home.
Sweats are very important during Happy Diwali Deepavali as it is the most common kind of food eaten during Diwali. Some sweets eaten include Kheer, Gulab Jamun and Shankarpale. There are also several savoury dishes eaten. Diwali cuisine is mainly vegetarian.
