General information on antidepressants
Definition
Antidepressants are the drugs of depressive illness. To the point that we could say that depression is ... which heals under antidepressants.

In fact, they are effective in other diseases than depressive diseases:

anxious diseases (panic disorder, phobias, obsessive disorders)
some painful conditions (migraines, chronic pain, vascular pain of the face, ...).
On the other hand, they are not effective on non-pathological sadness, ordinary at certain moments of life: they are not pills of happiness.

Other properties
Antidepressants may, depending on their origin, have other properties:

anxiolytics: for sedative antidepressants;
stimulants: for so-called psychotonic antidepressants.
These side effects appear from the first days of treatment, while the antidepressant effect occurs only after a delay of several weeks.
