Shouko Komi is the main character of Komi Can't Communicate. Shouko Komi has a communication disorder and is bad at communicating with people. Though Shouko Komi is regarded as the Madonna of Shouko Komi school, Shouko Komi is incapable of socializing with others to such a level that it can be called a communication disorder. Shouko Komi is unable to utter a word nor sound in Shouko Komi daily life due to Shouko Komi crippling anxiety and fear of rejection by Shouko Komi peers. However, Shouko Komi dreams of overcoming this adversity and desires to build friendly relationships with others and make 100 friends. The first person in Shouko Komi school to realize Shouko Komi had an inability to communicate well was Shouko Komi fellow classmate Tadano Hitohito. Tadano decided to help Shouko Komi overcome Shouko Komi anxiety and make Shouko Komi dream of 100 friends a reality. He became Shouko Komi first friend. With Tadano's help, Shouko Komi now attempts to socialize with and befriend the other students of Shouko Komi class.
Shouko Komi hardly talks with people. Is Shouko Komi is forced to speak Shouko Komi trembles like a vibrating phone. To communicate with Shouko Komi friends Shouko Komi usually carries a notebook and writing utensils to communicate with Shouko Komi friends. However, when Shouko Komi forgets them, Shouko Komi freezes up.
