Motocross is a form of racing or motorcycle racing that is held on a dirt circuit. The sport evolved from motorcycle test competitions in the UK. The name motocross is taken from the combination of words of French origin for motorcycle, motocyclette, or moto for short, and cross country, or cross country.
Initially, the motocross event started as a test competition, such as the quarterly Auto-Cycle Clubs trial held in 1909 and the Scottish Six Days Trial which began in 1912. But gradually this trial event became a competition to find out who the fastest to find the finish line
