Police Inspector Peter Glebsky comes to spend his vacation at the small hotel "At the Dead Alpinist". On the third day, the guests wake up from the roar of an avalanche that has blocked the Bottleneck - the only way out of the gorge. The phone does not work, there is no connection with the outside world. Soon a strange man knocks on the door of the hotel...
The story was written by the Strugatsky brothers in 1969 and described by them as "another waste of the detective genre."
