WHAT IS A DRAFT SURVEY
A Draft Survey is a method used on board ships to determine the weight of cargo loaded or discharged by measuring the vessel’s drafts before and after loading. This process involves reading the draft marks on the ship’s hull, correcting for factors such as trim, water density, and ballast, and using hydrostatic tables to calculate the displacement. The difference in displacement before and after cargo operations gives the cargo weight. Draft surveys are commonly used for bulk cargoes like coal, grain, and ore, ensuring accurate measurement for commercial and regulatory purposes.
