This app offers ideas and advice for those interested in working with people with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a neuromuscular disease. It is aimed at parents of children with SMA and those who suffer from it themselves. And also to others who work with children with SMA and participate in their physical exercises.

The application consists of simple exercises that can be done at home. The exercises were chosen according to the functional level. The functional levels we used take into account the child's ability to sit up with or without assistance and their ability to walk independently (children who do not sit up, children who sit up and children who walk). Some exercises require the child to understand the instructions, so you will need to check if the exercise is suitable for the child.

The app includes suggestions on how to make the exercises easier or harder, if the degree of difficulty needs to be adjusted. Information on how many times, how long or how often the exercises should be performed has been deliberately excluded. The child's strength and endurance should be the determining factors that guide you here.

Ideally, these exercises should be performed with the advice of a professional experienced in the care of people with neuromuscular disease.

For many of the exercises, we recommend the use of toys to encourage the child to participate and perform the activities. The child must always be able to grab his toy at the end. He must feel that the effort required is worth it. It is also important that the exercises are safe for the child. Make sure the child's risk of falling is minimized by staying nearby, ready to provide the necessary support. Finally and perhaps most important of all: exercises should be fun!
