With this app we aim to provide inspiration and advice for anyone interested in exercising for people with the neuromuscular disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). It is intended for parents of children with SMA, patients with SMA and their relatives who participate in their exercise.

The app contains simple exercises that you can do at home. The exercises were selected according to the level of functionality and age. The functional levels we used are whether the child can sit with or without support and whether he can walk independently (not sitting, sitting and walking). The exercises are intended for certain age groups, but of course they can also be used with older or younger children who need to practice movement. Some exercises require the child to understand the instructions, so you will need to assess whether an individual exercise is suitable for a particular child.

The app includes suggestions on how to make the exercises easier or harder if the level of difficulty needs to be adjusted. We have deliberately not given instructions on how many times, how long or how often the exercises should be performed. In this case, the child's strength and endurance must be the decisive and leading factors.

For several exercises, we recommend the use of toys that attract the child to participate and perform the exercises. Always make sure the child can get their toy at the end. It is important that the child feels that the effort is worth it. It is also important that the exercises are safe. Minimize the risk of your child falling by staying close to him and ready to support him if needed. And last but not least, and perhaps most important of all - exercises should be fun!
