Peñafiel Castle began to be built in the 10th century, although its current appearance is the product of important interventions that took place during the 14th and 15th centuries. This medieval fortress was declared a National Monument in 1917 and has currently become an emblem for wine tourism in the Ribera del Duero, with the Provincial Wine Museum located in its southern courtyard.
Peñafiel, together with its castle, constituted a fundamental point in the defensive line of the Duero, both for Christians and Muslims back in the 9th and 10th centuries. From the hill, the castle dominated the valleys of the Duero, Duratón and Botijas rivers, and protected to the population.
The Provincial Wine Museum was installed in the Peñafiel Castle in 1999 and since then it receives an average of 100,000 visits a year, numbers that have turned this fortress into a 'place of pilgrimage' for lovers of cultural tourism and of wine tourism.
A visit to the Provincial Wine Museum is a journey through the history and culture of wine that brings tourists closer to the production and preparation techniques of some of the most famous wines in the world.
In the tasting room it is possible to do a guided tasting of various wines from the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, as well as attend professional courses and tastings.
To access the Castle you can go up by private car. On some occasions, such as: national holidays, long weekends and special dates, the castle offers a free coach service in the parking lot next to the hill, making it mandatory to leave the car in a parking lot.
These buses operate during the museum's opening hours and leave approximately every half hour.
