The story Little Women is about the lives of the four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy and their mother Marmee, who is very outspoken women for her time.
It’s a wonderful 19th century story written by American author Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888). It was originally published in two volumes in 1868 and 1869. The two volumes were then issued in 1880 as a single novel entitled Little Women or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy by Louisa M. Alcott
The original volume of Little Women (1868) is made up of 23 chapters.
Subsequently, the author added a further 24 chapters to the story line. The 2nd volume of Little Women, Part Two (Chapters 24-47), was published in 1869. The novel is released in UK under the title Good Wives.
The book Little Women Meg, Jo, Bet, Amy by Louisa M Alcott is a semi-autobiographical account of the author’s childhood experiences with her three sisters. It is set in in the Alcott family home, Orchard House in Concord, Massachusett in the 1860s.
The story tells of how the sisters grow up, find love and find their place in the world. It details their passage from childhood to womanhood.
The story charts the childhood games, problems, their domestic adventures, their efforts to increase the family income and their friendship with the neighbours.
The book explores the sisters’ relationship with each other and with their mother; love and care for their father, and their emotional connection with their friends and acquaintances.
Each of the March sisters has a different personality, which makes it interesting to read.
Generations of readers have loved these novels since they were first published.
The popularity of the novel Little Women or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy by Louisa M. Alcott has given rise to numerous Little Women film adaptations of the story including two silent movies, Little Women (1917) and Little Women (1918), and at least seven other movies , including: Little Women (1933), Little Women (1946), Little Women (1949), Little Women (1958), and Little Women (1978), Little Women (1994) and the most recent Little Women (2019) as well as several TV series.

Louisa May Alcott ended Little Women (1868) with the words “So the curtain falls upon Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy. Whether it ever rises again, depends upon the reception given the first act of the domestic drama called Little Women.”
Soon enough, she wrote the 2nd part of the story which covers the years after the Civil War. And then went on to write two sequels to her popular work, both of which also featured the March sisters: Little Men and Jo's Boys
