Upon ascending to the throne of the Kingdom of Bhutan in 1972, Jigme Wangchuck sought to assess the happiness of his 600,000 subjects. To achieve this, he established the Centre for Bhutan Studies with the aim of developing a questionnaire capable of gauging the happiness of the Bhutanese population.
