Cactus is a collective name for the plants of the cactus family ( Latin Cactaceae ) The word itself is derived from the old Greek word al-Greek. Κάκτος which in classical Greek was used to refer to some not well-known plant, apparently fairly prickly.

Carl Linnaeus introduced the name of the genus Cactus into botanical taxonomy in 1737, most likely cutting the word "melocactus" (translated as a prickly melon) to which the Spanish colonizers most often referred to most succulent plants with spines. The homeland of all kinds of cacti is America : Southern and Northern.
