The Binkel Game is a mobile app for iOS and Android where 2 to 5 players can participate in a quiz where they themselves are the pawns on a physical game board on Turnovaplein. One player creates a new game and chooses a theme (questions about Turnhout or questions about Belgium) and then gives a name to his quiz. He also fills in his own player name together with his age. He then receives a QR code that the other participants must scan (with an alternative option of an alphanumeric code). The other participants then also enter their player name and age. When everyone presses “done”, the quiz starts and the first round starts with a random player.
Each round, the active player rolls a die and moves forward a number of places on the board based on the result. All players are then shown the same new multiple choice question. Everyone must choose the correct answer as quickly as possible. However, the player whose turn it is at that moment has priority. If this player is correct, they may move forward two extra steps, if not, the fastest of the other players may move forward one step. Finally, the turn continues to the next player in order of the player list.
The winner of the game is the player who is the first to complete a complete circle of the game board and then reach the center of the game board via the path of his symbol. This winner will have the opportunity to take a selfie in the app, dress it up with fun stickers and hang it up in the digital “wall of fame” that accompanies his symbol. The winner can choose whether the player name should be visible or not. The photo also includes the date of the victory. In addition to the option to hang the photo digitally on site, the player can also save the photo locally or share it via his own device, for example on social media or via email according to the standard methods of the device's operating system.
Anyone who has the app can scan the symbols on the square via a second part of the app to view the digital “wall of fame” of each symbol via Augmented Reality. The number of photos per symbol is limited, with the oldest photos always making way for the newest photos.
