Everyday millions of products worldwide are thrown away simply because they’ve surpassed their expiry date. In households, this results in wasted money and food. For businesses, especially those in the pharmaceutical and food industries, this can mean a significant loss to their bottom line. Consuming expired products can also pose health risks. This primary purpose of the Expiry Date APP is to curb these issues by offering an efficient, digitalized system for monitoring the shelf life of products.

At its core, the Expiry Date App’s aim is to make an easy experience for the user. Upon launching, users are greeted with the Main Page, a clear and concise list of items they’ve input, complete with details like name, description and most importantly, their expiry date. Colour coded items, thanks to the ColourConvertor class, instantly inform users about the proximity of an item’s expiry, red for items that are expired or expiring today, orange for those expiring tomorrow, and green for the rest.
We wanted to make adding an item, an easy seamless experience. By navigating to the AddPage, users can input details of their product, including capturing an image of their product, ensuring a visual representation of the item that is in their list. Once added, the item is serialized and stored in the local storage, making sure no data is lost even when the app is restarted. Another standout feature is the app’s proactive approach to ensuring the user does not miss the expiry date. It doesn’t just wait for users to check the expiry dates, instead it regularly checks the stored items expiry dates in the background. If an item is nearing its expiry date, the app sends out a timely notification. This ensures that users are always in the loop and can take necessary actions, like consuming the product or using it before it goes bad.

The settings page encapsulates the users control over the apps functionality. Here they can manage notifications, deciding whether to enable or disable them. There are also buttons for sorting the individual items by their expiry date, ensuring items that are expiring sooner rather than later are shown at the top of the list. There is an option to wipe they entire list of its entries, giving the user a blank slate and options for customizing the font. Events, such as item deletion, trigger UI refreshes, ensuring the display is always up-to-date.
