The Constitution of 22 September 1960 established a highly centralized presidential system. After the military coup of 19 November 1968 is repealed and replaced by a fundamental law November 28, 1968 (order of CMLN on the organization of government) pending constitutionnel1 referendum.

The Constitution of 2 June 1974 was adopted by referendum with 99% in favor. The military left alone to power with a single party.
