Swollen nose is a very disturbing symptom that is different for various people. Some may experience severe redness and pain on one side of the nose, while others feel that their nose is blocked and need to blow them all the time. Sometimes the pain in the nose spreads to the cheeks or eyes on the same side, and others may even feel lymph nodes in the neck area. Other symptoms that may be related to swollen nose are headaches, toothaches and facial pain.
Possible causes of swelling in the nose and symptoms associated with it include local infection, sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, trauma, nasal polyps, and in children, foreign bodies.
Causes of swollen nose
Infection. One possible cause of swelling is local infection inside or outside the nose. At first it may look like reddish and firm pimples. Then it starts to swell and enlarge, until it causes pain, redness and eventually produces pus. If in the nose, it can occur because the nose hair is pulled or the habit of nose picking or blowing the nose too often, causing mucosal lesions. From lesions, bacteria such as staphylococci, the natural defenses that cause infections. This is similar to when there is swelling on the nose skin, moreover there are pores that can become blocked and infected with staph bacteria.
If a small pimple grows larger it can form abscesses or boils, which are a collection of local pus, also red, warm and painful, sometimes accompanied by fever. Regional lymph nodes can also become swollen and sore, which is activated by the immune system fighting disruptive bacteria.
