Let's say you're in the gym watching the gorilla doing dead lifts. There are 7 plates on each side of the bar and you'd like to know how much the barbell weighs. You could add it up in your head but sometimes its not all that easy. Especially if you've been working out too and there is very little blood in your brain at the moment.

But further, its easy to get a little bit confused even when you're building up a barbell through a series of increasing weights and reps. Its nice to have a tool that can verify the weight on the bar as you build up the barbell through the series.
