It is important to note that all the words in Spanish have an accent. The accent is the greater intensity of the voice to highlight a syllable with respect to the others. Some words carry a tilde identifying the spelling accent. All the words have an accent but not all have an accent. There are rules to determine which syllable the spelling accent (tilde) is on.

The four types of words that determine stress are:

The acute grave words and esdrujulas are classified according to the stressed syllable in:

Sharp: They are those words in which the voice is loaded in the last syllable. These words carry an accent (graphic accent) when they end in n, s or vowel.
Graves: They are those words in which the voice is loaded in the penultimate syllable.
Esdrújulas: are those words that have the accent on the third to last syllable and the accent mark is marked on all of them.
Sobreesdrújulas: are those that have the accent on the previous syllable of the antepenultimate (fourth and fifth) and all of them are marked with the tilde.
