Gullable is a free app about gulls of the Pacific Northwest region, with hopes to include further species.
No other group of birds conjures up feelings of both boredom and bewilderment. Gulls do not have colorful plumages or pleasing vocalizations like many songbirds. They lack the problem solving skills of crows and ravens. Shorebirds offer just as difficult—if not more so—ID challenges for birders, yet these specialists are beloved all the same. Even a pigeon is more amiable, not attempting to snatch loose-handed meals from sitting lunch goers. For one or more of these reasons, gulls tend to be overlooked by laypeople and birders alike. With their cosmopolitan distribution and increasing reliance on the human environment for food and nest sites, many gull species are readily accessible for the curious observer. Whether it is their behaviour or life history, teasing out overlapping molts or witnessing courtship displays, you will be pleasantly surprised at just how much there is to learn about these everyday birds.
