etMEDx is a comprehensive and patient-centered medical appointment system designed to bridge the gap between healthcare services and the public in Ethiopia. It brings together four critical components of accessible care: appointment booking, ambulance dispatch, medicine ordering, and counseling services — all through a single mobile-friendly interface, available in both English and local languages.
1. Appointment Booking System
The core of our platform allows users to effortlessly book appointments with healthcare professionals at nearby clinics, hospitals, or private practices. Patients can view doctor profiles, specialty areas, available time slots, and consultation fees before confirming appointments. This real-time scheduling system helps reduce long wait times at health facilities, improve patient flow, and ensure timely access to qualified health personnel. For underserved areas, the app will prioritize public health centers and give referral options based on urgency.
Patients receive SMS or in-app reminders about upcoming visits, and they can cancel or reschedule appointments directly. Integration with hospital systems (where applicable) ensures healthcare providers are informed in advance, improving care coordination.
2. Emergency Ambulance Dispatch
Recognizing the need for rapid emergency response in both urban and rural Ethiopia, the platform incorporates a geolocation-enabled ambulance booking system. Patients or caretakers can request an ambulance with one tap, and the system identifies the nearest available ambulance provider — whether governmental, Red Cross, or private. Users receive real-time tracking updates and estimated arrival times.
• The ambulance service includes options for:
• Basic emergency transport
• Maternal emergencies
• Inter-facility patient transfer
For areas with limited ambulance access, the platform displays emergency contact information and community health transport alternatives, ensuring no one is left behind.
3. Medicine Ordering and Delivery
Our platform connects patients with licensed pharmacies, allowing them to order prescription and over-the-counter medicines from the comfort of their homes. Patients can upload prescriptions, browse available brands or generic alternatives, and choose between pickup or delivery. Delivery options are particularly beneficial for elderly, chronically ill, or post-surgical patients who face mobility challenges.
• To ensure safety and regulation compliance:
• All pharmacies must be registered with the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA)
• Medicine authenticity is verified prior to delivery
• Counseling on dosage, usage, and side effects is provided during checkout or by a follow-up call
• This feature also helps reduce stock-outs by tracking demand trends, and supports rural areas through scheduled drop-off routes.
4. Mental Health and Counselling Services
Mental well-being is an often-overlooked component of healthcare in Ethiopia. The platform offers access to licensed psychologists, counselors, and social workers, providing private, stigma-free counselling sessions via chat, voice, or video. Services include:
• Individual counseling (stress, anxiety, depression)
• Marriage and family counseling
• Substance abuse support
• HIV/TB and chronic illness-related psychosocial support
Sessions can be scheduled in advance, with multilingual support (Amharic, Afan Oromo and more), and providers are selected based on patient preference and case type.
