The Tamil Nadu Irrigated Agriculture Modernization (TNIAMP) Project aims to enhance productivity, improve climate resilience in irrigated agriculture, promote sustainable water management, and increase value addition for farmers and agro-entrepreneurs in Tamil Nadu. This project targets 66 sub-basins identified for comprehensive interventions over a seven-year period, focusing on modernizing irrigation systems and strengthening agricultural practices.
TNIAM integrates strategic investments in infrastructure, institutional strengthening, and capacity building. The project includes initiatives such as participatory irrigation management, advanced agricultural techniques, and promoting convergence for enhanced service delivery. Building on the success of the IAMWARM (Irrigated Agriculture Modernization and Water-Bodies Restoration and Management) Project, TNIAM aims to advance the reforms initiated under its predecessor. IAMWARM significantly modernized irrigation systems, enhanced water use efficiency, and introduced climate-resilient agricultural practices. It supported crop diversification into high-value varieties, strengthened Water Users Associations (WUAs), and fostered Participatory Irrigation Management (PIM). These reforms established a foundation for community-driven water management and sustainable agricultural growth in Tamil Nadu.
The TNIAM Project expands on IAMWARM’s achievements by targeting high-priority tank irrigation systems not covered previously, including rehabilitating 4,778 tanks, with 1,000 tanks planned for intervention in Phase 1. The project spans a command area of 5,43,000 hectares, addressing key challenges such as water scarcity, inefficient irrigation, and climate change impacts. By modernizing irrigation infrastructure and optimizing water use, TNIAM fosters resilience and sustainability in agriculture.
A critical focus of TNIAM is integrating farmers and agro-entrepreneurs into advanced value chains. It promotes agricultural marketing initiatives, develops agro-processing units, and introduces post-harvest technologies to reduce losses and maximize profits. Livelihood improvement through livestock and inland fisheries development further diversifies income for rural communities, enhancing their economic resilience and quality of life.
