The lantern in the early days of Islam
The lantern was used in the early days of Islam for lighting at night to go to mosques and visit friends and relatives. As for the word lantern, it is Greek and refers to one of the means of illumination. In some Semitic languages, the lantern is called “fanas.” Al-Fayrouz Abadi, the author of Al-Muheet Dictionary, mentions that the original meaning of the lantern is “the gossip.” The dictionary’s owner refers to his name by this name because he appears in the middle of the darkness and the word This meaning is well known.
The origin of the lantern
There are many stories about the origin of the lantern. One of these stories is that the Fatimid Caliph used to go out to the streets on the night of sighting the crescent of the month of Ramadan, and the children would go out with him to light the way for him.
There is another story about one of the Fatimid caliphs that he wanted to light the streets of Cairo throughout the nights of Ramadan, so he ordered all the sheikhs of mosques to hang lanterns that are lit by candles placed inside them. A third story is told that during the Fatimid era, women were not allowed to leave their homes except in the month of Ramadan They were preceded by a boy carrying a lantern to warn the men that there was a woman on the road so that they could turn away. In this way, the women enjoyed going out and at the same time the men did not see them. After the women were free to go out at any time, people continued to adhere to the tradition of the lantern, where children carry lanterns, walk in the streets and sing.
Whatever the origin of the lantern, the lantern remains a special symbol of Ramadan, especially in Egypt. This tradition has been passed down from generation to generation and now children carry lanterns in the month of Ramadan and go out into the streets singing and swinging the lanterns. A few days before Ramadan, every child starts looking forward to buying his own lantern, and many people are hanging large, colorful lanterns on the streets, in front of houses, apartments, and even on trees.
