The app for the decentralized memorial “Places of Remembrance” by Renata Stih & Frieder Schnock leads to the 80 double-sided signs (text & images) in the Bavarian Quarter of Berlin-Schöneberg. The German texts on the signs refer to National Socialist regulations and laws that excluded and disenfranchised Jews between 1933 and 1945 and thus prepared the way for deportation and later murder.
The app can be used to access the translations (including audio) of the texts on the signs. By positioning the 80 locations on the city map using GPS, the app can be used to find the nearest sign on a street lighting pole when walking through it.
“Places of Remembrance” is a monument of the state of Berlin and the app supports the understanding of the 3rd Reich in school lessons.
