Kidung is an old form of poetry, especially one that developed since the Middle Ages of Javanese literature, namely from the late Majapahit period. As an old poem, its form is very tied to a strict meter, in regulating the rhyme pattern in a stanza, the number of syllables in a line, and the number of lines in a stanza. Lexically, the word "kidung" comes from Middle Javanese and is equivalent to tembang or sekar, meaning 'song' in New Javanese. The form of the verb kidung in Central Javanese is mangidung, 'to sing'. New Javanese also knows the term kidung which has more or less the same meaning as kidung in Central Javanese, and the verb form is ngidung or angidung. This meaning is then often used in the use of the term "kidung" as a praise or religious song in modern Javanese and Indonesian.

Kidung is used to present stories and ritual readings, especially in the Balinese Hindu tradition. Many folk tales inherited from the pre-Islamic Javanese period are immortalized in the form of kidung, such as Panji stories (for example in Kidung Malat, Kidung Wangbang Wideya, and Kidung Waseng) or other contemporary stories, such as Kidung Harsawijaya, Kidung Sunda, Song of Sorandaka, and Song of Ranggalawe. There are also songs that process animal stories as stated in Tantri Kamandaka (for example in Song of Tantri Pisacaharana and Song of Tantri Manduka Prakarana).
