Mapping is one of the preferred tools of the Forest Resources Management laboratory (University of Liège – Faculty of Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech) for monitoring large populations over long periods.
Whether it involves the identification of species present from satellite images, the distinction between the most productive forest stations and those with very little productivity intended as a refuge for fauna and flora, or even monitoring of the latest health crisis, such as that caused by the spruce bark beetle which took advantage of the warming of our climate, we use and produce results in cartographic form.
In order to facilitate the precise distribution of map layers, we have developed a web map portal (https://forestimator.gembloux.ulg.ac.be/).
This geoportal allows the consultation and downloading of numerous maps which extend over the whole of Wallonia (Belgium), starting with the species composition map which has aroused enormous interest within the community of managers and scientists. foresters.
In order to reach a wider audience, particularly younger people, we have released Forestimator in a version for mobile phones (Android). The application is intended to be relatively easy to use.
This application is carried out within the framework of the Five-Year Forestry Research and Extension Plan.
The organization responsible for the creation and distribution of this application is the University of Liège, whose head office is located at Place du 20-Août, 7 in 4000 Liège. The University of Liège is a public institution which has a dual legal personality: it acts, on the one hand, as the French Community of Belgium (of which it is a decentralized body) (0807.970.507) and, on the other hand , as a decentralized and autonomous public establishment, called “the Heritage of the University of Liège” (0325.777.171).
