How to Become an Interior Designer is a career choice like any other; one that requires real commitment, drive, effort, time and money. There are various routes into the field but studying and work experience will almost certainly be part of your career path should you decide to follow this route.

Of course, the first step is in deciding to do it in the first place. It will take considerable time, training and effort, so you must be absolutely sure this is the career path for you. This is why many people will try and get work experience with experienced interior designers in the first place to try and decide if this is the way they want to go. Although you will want to repeat this step once you have studied, it's worth doing it as part of the decision making process.

There are two paths from here. In our qualification obsessed society, most people will want to complete a course and study everything they need to know, and there is great merit in doing that. In fact, most interior designers working today will have completed such a course, before embarking on a form of apprenticeship to pick up real world experience.

However, there is no legal requirement to take a course in order to work as an interior designer, and as such it is possible to go at it from the other angle. You won't want to start with no knowledge at all - a good eye is a pre-requisite and may get you far, but certainly won't get you all the way. But you can learn on the job as is common in many other professions (particularly the media) and how many people traditionally learnt before the explosion of universities.

Even if you do a course, you will most likely end up work shadowing or in work experience once you have completed it.

The reality then for most interior designers is a freelance career, constantly hustling to get the next job. This means being willing to spend as much time chasing work as doing it (if not more). Business acumen is a great advantage to interior designers, alongside the vast swathes of knowledge required to do a good job.
