Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia. The language has a rich set of words and expressions. The written form of the language uses a script derived from an ancient native language of Ethiopia called Ge'ez which uses a segmental writing system known as abugida (alphasyllabary). A single character in the script or alphabet is called fidel (an equivalent of a letter in the English language). Words in Amharic are made up of one or more fidel but three and four fidel words dominate the Amharic dictionary.
