The Tao Te Ching or Dao de Jing, commonly translated as The Book of the Way and Virtue, is one of the best known and most important works of literature in China. It was written between 350 and 250 a.C.1. Its authorship is traditionally attributed to Lao Tzi (literally "Old Master"), but most scholars today believe that Lao Tzi never existed and that the work is actually a meeting of proverbs belonging to a collective oral tradition dealing on the Tao (the "ultimate reality" of the universe).
The work inspired the emergence of various religions and philosophies, particularly Taoism and Buddhism chan (and its Japanese, Zen).
